Lab Facilities

Electrical Machines Lab

Electrical machines laboratory has two eyes - AC and DC machines   encompassing the all types of latest AC and DC machines, generators and motors with loading arrangement, thyristor controlled DC Drives operated by main DC & AC panel board. Transformers and various starters, variacs, load banks also form part of the equipments.

Electric Circuits Lab

This Lab consists of all types of measuring instruments and cathode ray oscilloscope, audio oscillators, function generators and various types of decade boxes.  Software such as MATLAB, EMTP are taught to the students in this lab to enable them to design, analyze & simulate and even compare with industry.

This has been found to give immense practical utility to the students in their future career

Electrical Workshop

The main practice in this lab is to test and commission electrical equipments, instruments and to develop prototype models, PCB-design, and fabrications.

Megger, Earth tester, Cutting players, screwdrivers were used and house wiring is practiced.

Controls System Lab

Control system dominates the modern way of life. This lab helps the students to know the wide applications  in manufacturing, aircraft control, computers, process industries. It is fully equipped with modern control equipments like control trainer kits with computer interface, P/PI,PID controllers, , DSO , CRO, Function generator ,closed loop control, AC &DC Servomotor, they can also simulate the linear and nonlinear systems using Matlab7.0 with computer.

Power Electronics Lab

This lab helps the students to study the switching devices, power devices and its applications in rectifier, inverter, chopper and resonant converter, to learn the PWM Techniques for both UPS and AC Drive applications. This lab is fully equipped with all types of modules like SCR Firing circuit module, SCR based half and fully controlled converter kit, IGBT based three phase PWM inverter module, chopper module’s based V/I commuted chopper module with firing module., CRO, Isolation Transfomer, single phase Auto Transformer Meters, Mosfet Based step Up and Step Down Choppers module

Measurement And Instrumentation Lab

This lab is to fortify the students with an adequate work experience in the measurement of different quantities and also helps to expertise in handling the instruments. This lab is fully equipped with measurements kits like AC Bridges, DC Bridges, A/D, D/A converters, Instrumentation Amplifiers, LVDT Transducer, Energy meter, Autotransformer, Ring specimen, Galvanometer, Current Transformer, CRO, Regulated power supply

Power Simulation Laboratory

Enables to acquire software development skills and experience in the usage of standard packages necessary for analysis and simulation of power system required for its planning operation and control.

440/230/110 KVA SUBSTATION, SRIPERUMPUDUR

This is the only substation having a range of 400 KVA. Our students visited their switchyard and distribution unit. In earlier unit consisting of breakers, which is operated manually, a current transformer, which is, used to step-down the current to known ratio.

In distribution side, it has 21 feeders like 230 KVA is given to 10 feeder lines and 110KVA is given to 11 feeders. Each feeder is giving a power to different substations. Here for communication and to control the whole unit relays are used.

Students felt very happy to organize this trip and they gained more knowledge by seeing practically.

INDOTECH TRANSFORMERS LTD.,
THIRUMAZHISAI

The Company has a modern winding shop with machines that can take up to 5 tonnes. The shop is fully equipped to handle up to 100 MVA, 220KV class. The company has also got other facilities such as over head crane, ovens, Vaccum oven and modern insulation shop.

During their Visit the students observed various high voltage transformer in different stages of manufacturing. The company’s medium power bay manufacturing upto 5 MVA 33 KV class transformers was also busy with jobs at different stages. The important jobs on the shop floor were:

  • 15 MVA 66/11.55KV Delta/Star Transformer with on load tap changer
  • 10 MVA 110/33-11KV Delta/Star Transformer with on load tap changer
  • 8 MVA 33/11KV Delat/Star Transformer with on load tap changer

The company has two test laboratories. The medium test laboratory is equipped to test upto 20MVA 33 KV class including the temperature rise test. The larger power laboratory has state –of-the-art equipments to test upto 100 MVA 220 KV transformers. The major equipments are 300 KV testing transformer, 8000 KVAR Capacitors Banks, loading transformer and 125 cycles high frequency generator set.
